As we are all emerging out of our homes following Shelter in Place orders we may be more aware that our bodies feel different than they did just mere months prior.

You may notice it has become increasingly more difficult to rise from the couch. Or perhaps you are noticing you are bumping into the walls as you walk down the hallway. Perhaps everyday tasks seem more difficult to complete. Please do not dismiss this as sudden onset aging. Do not accept this as “it is just the way it’s going to be from now on”. It is truly amazing and unfortunate how quickly our bodies can lose strength, mobility, and balance following sedentary living.

Disuse of muscles leads to atrophy and a loss of muscle strength at a rate of around 12% a week (Jiricka, 2008). After 3–5 weeks of bed rest, almost half the normal strength of a muscle is lost. Nursing Times, June 2009.

We were called to suddenly and completely change our lifestyles from daily errands, social events, and recreational activities to binge-watching TV and catching up with a good book in order to remain safe and healthy. These losses of steps and activity can directly affect your daily function and ability to date.  Most critically is the increased risk of falls due to loss of muscle strength and imbalance.

Long term Sedentary lifestyle can lead to

  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Stiff joints
  • Negative impact on mental health/depression
  • Fall risk due to an imbalance
  • Poor sleep patterns
  • Loss of Endurance
  • Osteopenia/Osteoporosis
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Type II Diabetes
  • Obesity

But the good news is this is by no means the end to your story. Evidence shows increasing safe and appropriate activity can reduce the risk of falls and improve mental and physical health. With the proper guidance and professional knowledge from Physical Therapists, you can regain function.
